Boris says Blair to blame for coronavirus testing chaos as he attacks leadership failure | UK | News

Boris Johnson answered questions from senior MPs on the coronavirus crisis still gripping the UK in a Liason Committee meeting on Wednesday. Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt quizzed Mr Johnson on the delay in testing and the track, trace and isolate strategy. Mr Johnson insisted the UK had failed to learn from the pandemics of the past while former Labour leader Tony Blair was Prime Minister, he added his lead to difficulties dealing with the coronavirus crisis.

Mr Johnson said: “We did have a test, track and trace operation but unfortunately we did not have the capacity in PHE.

“We did not have the enzymes, test kits, we just did not have the volume.

“Nor did we have enough experienced trackers ready to mount the kind of operation that they did in some other east Asian countries for instance.

He said: “The brutal reality is this country did not learn the lessons of SARS or MERS.

“We didn’t have the testing capacity.”

“We didn’t have a testing operation ready to go on the scale that we needed.”
