California earthquake: California and Nevada rocked by huge 6.4 quake – Las Vegas rattled | World | News


The huge 6.4 magnitude quake struck 58km west of Tonopah in Nevada, United States. Tremors were also fell in Fresno and Clovis in California – hitting just after 4am local time. The earthquake, which has been confirmed by the USGS, hit just after 11am UTC, (12pm BST) at a depth of around 4.1km. And sizeable aftershocks were also recorded after the initial quake.

Witnesses recorded their experiences on earthquake-tracking website EMSC-CSEM.

One resident of Fresno, a major city of almost half a million people, said: “My bed was shaking and my TV was shaking.”

Another resident of the same city said: “My bed was shaking.”

A third Fresno resident said: “My first time feeling an earthquake this strong but the ground was definitely shaking pretty strong.”

The earthquake struck around 140 miles from Fresno.

Las Vegas was also rattled by the quake.

One resident said: “Apartment building swayed, most hanging fixtures took a twirl and standing lights bobbed a bit.”

Another said: “Thought I was experiencing vertigo until I saw my light swinging.”

They said: “Biggest being 4.7 and 4.8. Stay safe.”

It is unclear if there has been any damage or injuries caused by the earthquake.

There have been numerous earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater nearby in recent days, local media has claimed.
