Chelsea hero Michael Ballack ‘all good’ after cancer scare forces major back surgery | Football | Sport

Ballack said: “Carlo Ancelotti wanted me to stay but the club made a decision to only give players of that age a one-year contract. I wanted two.

“Today I can say maybe it was wrong, I should have stayed even for that one year. I could never imagine that I would go back to Bayer Leverkusen until the last day, I actually thought we would find a way at Chelsea. I was really hoping I could stay until the end.”

Ballack starred alongside current Chelsea manager Frank Lampard in the Blues’ midfield and he recently offer his take on why his former team-mate is trying to sign his compatriot Kai Havertz from Leverkusen.

“I firmly believe that Frank Lampard would be 100 per cent behind Kai Havertz,” said Ballack. “He likes players who are very dangerous in front of goal and there aren’t many of those.

“Havertz is a player that Frank Lampard would help further, not least because he himself was a midfielder with an eye for goal, who was always moving into dangerous areas, looking to finish off a chance.”
