Chelsea news: Frank Lampard tipped to ask Billy Gilmour to ‘master’ key role | Football | Sport

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has been tipped to ask Billy Gilmour to play a simple role in his team to aid his progression. The 18-year-old midfielder burst onto the scene before the coronavirus outbreak brought professional football across Europe to a halt. Gilmour’s handful of performances confirmed the promise he had shown at academy and reserve team level.

The Scottish wonderkid delivered a man-of-the-match performance in the FA Cup fifth-round win against Premier League leaders Liverpool before another impressive display in the 4-0 thrashing of Everton five days later.

Chelsea are likely to pump plenty of money into strengthening their squad in the next transfer window but midfield looks like one of the few areas in Lampard’s squad that does not require plenty of additions.

A new number eight could emerge as a possibility and the Evening Standard report that Lampard will need more proof of Gilmour’s ability to fill that role before handing him the job.

As a result, it is claimed Gilmour could be given the key anchorman role to “master” instead.

“I have absolute trust in Billy,” he said. “I remember when he first came on against Sheffield United and we drew the game, people questioned this kid, but I have no problem with him.

“If he’s small in stature he’s huge in personality, and he’s also huge in talent. When I look at a midfield player I have lots of questions. Do you want to receive the ball in all positions and all moments? Yes, he does. Do you want to make angles and pick the right pass? Yes, he generally does. Will you put your foot in? Yes, he does.

“He does all the right things, and he’s humble. All his family were here tonight, his nan and grandad were down from Scotland, and what a performance. It wasn’t just as a youngster coming into the team, that’s one level, he performed like a top-class player going up against top-class players. It was a great night for Billy.

“He showed he is absolutely comfortable at this level. I’m the first not to get carried away, but if he can play like he played tonight then he’s comfortable at this level. He can get himself in and around the team. The players know that, they sense good players.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been credited with an interest in Gilmour.
