Chris Whitty hints coronavirus lockdown set for extension ‘too soon for next phase’ | UK | News

Dr Chris Whitty received a grilling from Sky News’ Political Editor Beth Rigby regarding the UK Government’s future plan to move out of the lockdown phase. The Chief Medical Officer explained that it was still uncertain when exactly the coronavirus outbreak will peak on Britain.

Ms Rigby said: “

Just to be clear, given that we are approaching the peak and at the end of the week the Government will review whether to relax restrictions.

“It seems to me that you are saying that the lockdown measures will continue beyond the end of this week.”

Dr Chris Whitty replied: “I think to be clear we do not know for certain that the peak will be at the end of this week.

“I think we are confident that we are there that will be too early to start calling the point where we can move to the next phase of this epidemic.”
