Jay Inslee made the intervention on Twitter after Trump tweeted “LIBERATE” Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia, an apparent endorsement to ending the lockdown in the Democrat governed states. Demonstrations calling for lockdowns to end have occurred in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia and Kentucky. Mr Inslee said: “The president’s statements this morning encourage illegal and dangerous acts.

“He is putting millions of people in danger of contracting COVID-19.

“His unhinged rantings and calls for people to ‘liberate’ states could also lead to violence.

“The president is fomenting domestic rebellion and spreading lies – even while his own administration says the virus is real, it is deadly and we have a long way to go before restrictions can be lifted.”

Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman also hit out at Trump. 

Ms Whitman, a Republican like Trump said: “This President is now truly getting out of control.

“In talking about “liberating” the states, he is using language that could well lead to rioting.

“No one has done more to undermine our constitution and destroy our country’s values than Donald Trump.”

Protestors say the severe economic restrictions are harming citizens.

Recently released federal guidance recommend three phases for re-opening businesses and social life slowly, with each phase lasting a fortnight.

Tim Walz, the Minnesota Governor responded to Trump by saying: “The president unveiled a three step plan that mirrors exactly what we’re trying to do.

“I called to ask, what are we doing differently about moving towards getting as many people back into the workforce without compromising the health of Minnesotans or the providers?

“And that will probably take longer than a two-word tweet, but I think there’s responsibility to tell us that.”

On Thursday 4,591 Americans died in 24 hours, according to John Hopkins University.

The data has begun to include deaths where coronavirus is the probable cause.

The US has now had over 33,000 deaths.

Protestors in Michigan accused Governor Gretchen Whitmer of dictatorial overreach.

According to Anthony Zurcher, the BBC North America Reporters, some of these protestors waved confederate flags.
