Coronavirus map LIVE: Boris prepares dramatic new laws – possible FULL LOCKDOWN in 24hrs | UK | News

The Prime Minister may enforce the measures within 24 hours amid concern members of the public are not listening to the Government’s warnings. At the weekend, pictures emerged of masses of people walking through parks and even attending markets despite the Government’s advice. Today, the House of Commons will also debate the Coronavirus Bill in all its stages in order to give the Government added powers to stop the outbreak of the Covid-19. The bill will be enshrined into law later this week and will allow such measures as closing ports and airports.

The Government has also sent out 1.5 million letters to the elderly and those who are vulnerable to the virus.

The letters ordered those groups to remain at home as part of a “shielding” process to protect them from the rest of the public.

With the death toll now standing at 281, McDonald’s has announced the closure of its chains from 7pm today.

Schools were shut last week as the UK as Mr Johnson increased measures to attempt to slow the spread of Covid-19.

7.21am update: Potential UK shutdown in the next 24 hours

The UK could be placed into a nationwide shutdown in the next 24 hours, Boris Johnson warned during his Sunday press conference.

Under the lockdown, movement could be restricted to essential trips in order to adhere to social distancing advice.

Mr Johnson said: “I don’t think you need to use your imagination much to see where we might have to go,’ he said.

“We will think about this very, very actively in the next 24 hours.

“We need to think about the kinds of measures that we have seen elsewhere, other countries that have been forced to bring in restrictions on people’s movements altogether.

“I don’t want to do that because I have tried to explain the public health benefits.”
