On Wednesday the infection killed 3,054 Americans, versus the 2,977 killed on 9/11 and the roughly 2,400 killed during the Pearl Harbor attack. Last month Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser strengthened the city’s coronavirus restrictions, banning groups of more than 10 from gathering indoors.

However the regulation does not apply to the White House or other federal property in the city.

On Wednesday evening Mr Trump hosted an event to celebrate the Jewish Hanukah festival, which was attended by around 200 people.

Pictures from the occasion show that whilst many attendees were wearing masks some were in very close proximity to each other and didn’t appear to be following social distancing guidelines.

On Thursday the White House held the annual congressional ball, dubbed the “Covid ball” by Mr Trump’s opponents.

The president was challenged over his decision to continue hosting events whilst America’s coronavirus pandemic continues to spiral out of control.

A journalist commented: “Across the street, you’ve been holding holiday parties with hundreds of people, many not wearing masks.

“Why are you modelling a different behaviour to the American people than what your scientists tell?”

In response Mr Trump said: “Well, they’re Christmas parties, and frankly, we’ve reduced the number very substantially, as you know.

“And I see a lot of people at the parties wearing masks.

“I mean, I would say that I look out at the audience at those parties, and we have a lot of people wearing masks, and I think that’s a good thing.”

The US has now recorded over 15.7 million coronavirus cases and 293,000 deaths, more than any other country in the world.

Speaking on Wednesday Chris Ruddy, a right-wing media chief and Trump ally, defended the decision to continue holding events.

He said: “I’ll certainly wear a mask going to the party.

“I’m not sure I’m gonna wear one as I’m eating and drinking and walking around.”

One attendee to a White House event was Alex Azar, the US health secretary.

Speaking to CNN he insisted he felt “safe” and “comfortable” at the events.

Mr Azar added: “Most of the individuals around me were wearing masks. We worked to keep distance.”

Mr Trump was diagnosed with coronavirus in October and received treatment at the Walter Reed Medical Centre.

A number of his inner team have also tested positive including Rudy Giuliani, who was released from hospital on Thursday after a four day stay.

Mr Giuliani claimed he was healed by the same mix of medicine the president took back in October.

Speaking to a New York radio station he said: “The minute I took the cocktail yesterday, I felt 100% better. It works very quickly, wow.”

Mr Trump is continuing to claim the November presidential election was rigged against him though none of his campaigns legal actions have succeeded in overturning the result in a single state.
