Dame Barbara Windsor: Young Carry On Star then vs now – how an actress became an icon

Perhaps Barbara was best know by most for her EastEnder’s career, but she had many iterations. From soaps to pantomines, comedy to blockbuster movies, she was a true star.

Barbara never had children and was open about how she never wanted children.

SHe was married three times, though, first to Ronnie Knight from 1964 to 1985.

She married chef Stephen Hollings in 1986 but the pair divorced in 1986.

In 2000 Barbara married recruitment consultant Scott Mitchell, who supported Barbara tireless through her illness and up until her death.

She came to fame in the Carry On films, in which she was often scantily dressed.

Barbara was honoured, appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2000 New Year Honours.

She became a Dame in 2016.

Tributes poured in for the star. EastEnders actor Sam Womack wrote on Twitter: “Can’t describe how devastated I am. So many memories,so much love and laughter. Those little feet walking up the corridor to make up,that iconic laugh she had! A true Nations Sweetheart and the ultimate professional. Love always our little cockney sparrow.”

Elton John wrote: “The world has lost the biggest ray of light. And heaven has the sweetest and funniest angel. #RIP #BarbaraWindsor”
