The states and the US Federal Trade Commission are to file a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing Facebook Inc of breaking the law. The FTC said in a statement that it would seek an injunction that “could, among other things: require divestitures of assets, including Instagram and WhatsApp.”
ew York Attorney General Letitia James’ office has said she will make a major “business related” announcement on Wednesday afternoon.
The lawsuit will be filed in federal court in Washington, according to a source close to the matter.
The US Federal Trade Commission has been probing Facebook, as have state attorneys general.
More than 40 are expected to join the lawsuit.
If the lawsuits are filed, Facebook would be the second major tech company sued this year.
In October the Justice Department sued Alphabet Inc’s Google.
A spokesman for Facebook declined comment on Wednesday.
Facebook was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2004.
The latest lawsuit will be one of the group’s biggest legal battles since its inception.
Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg and his fellow Harvard College peers Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
The social media platform has 2.7 billion active users.
