Older Person bus passes can be claimed by most people when they reach 60 so long as they live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The passes can be applied for from a local council and the government provides a tool on their website for guiding people on where to go.
In England, a free bus pass can be claimed when reaching female state pension age, regardless of actual gender.
However, those living in London could receive a “60+ Oyster photocard” from age 60 that will provide them with free travel on all busses, tubes and other forms of transport within the capital.
There are a number of different travel schemes that can be applicable within London, which also includes the English National Concessionary Scheme and the aforementioned Older Person’s Freedom Pass.
Regardless of what scheme is actually being used though, travellers in London will now have limitations placed on their travels.
These changes came into effect yesterday (June 15) and as such, consumers should be weary when heading out to potentially take advantage of the high-street reopening.
The changes were introduced as part of a recent funding and financial agreement made with the government and Shashi Verma, the Chief Technology Officer at TFL, made the following comments when introducing the plan: “We are working hard to ensure that those who have no option other than to travel using public transport can do so safely.
“Given the national requirement to maintain two-metre social distancing, the capacity of buses and trains is hugely reduced.
“These temporary changes to the Older Person’s Freedom Pass and 60+ Oyster card pass during morning peak travel will help reduce the risk of crowding when it would be more difficult to maintain social distancing.”
While TFL highlighted that travelling during peak hours should be limited, they have not banned it outright.
They detailed that if travellers have no option other than to use public transport during the morning peak period, they should use the regular pay as you go systems in place.
This can be done through a contactless card, mobile device or an Oyster card.
TFL highlighted that staff will still be on hand to assist older Londoners make essential journeys where needed.
London councils will also be updating travel customers through their websites, advertising and public awareness campaigns.
