Gareth Southgate leads English sport’s calls for NHS support throughout coronavirus crisis | Football | Sport

“I know lots of people will be missing their weekend sporting rituals over the coming weeks – whether it’s going to the ground, the pub or round their friends’ house to watch their favourite teams,” he said.

“But nobody can sit on the bench when it comes to the national response to the global coronavirus pandemic, which is why the NHS is calling up sporting heroes to help their fans through this tough time, and encourage them to do the right thing and stay at home.”

Southgate, meanwhile, wrote an open letter to England fans last month and said: “We were due to play next week and to represent you all this summer, but now is clearly not the moment for us to take centre-stage.

“The heroes will be the men and women who continue working tirelessly in our hospitals and medical centres to look after our friends and families.

“They won’t receive the individual acclaim, but we all know their importance is beyond anything we do on the pitch.
