Guardians of Galaxy 3 SPOILERS? Director James Gunn teases Rocket storyline | Films | Entertainment

Guardians of the Galaxy joined the MCU back in 2014, with the sequel released three years later. While fans have already had to wait a while for the third instalment, it’s looking like being a couple of years more before Vol. 3 hits cinemas. With the current coronavirus lockdown, director James Gunn has been engaging with fans on social media and participating in Comicbook’s #QuarantineWatchParty, tweeting along with viewers.

Asked about whether Rocket’s (voiced by Bradley Cooper) origin story would be a big part of the upcoming third film, Gunn dropped some teasers.

“I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future,” he said.

The director went on to say that the scars on Rocket’s back would have particular significance to the plots ahead.

“A lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along,” he tweeted.

“And the trilogy, more than anything else, is abut a group of outsiders who have all experienced childhood trauma — with the exception of Dax, who is the only one with a completely positive relationship to those who raised him,” Gunn told Guardians of the Galaxy fans.

He later replied to a question regarding the scars which are visible on the racoon’s back, hinting at the details of his backstory which will play into the third movie.

“[They’re] part of the cybernetics apparently painfully placed in his body,” he tweeted. “One of my favourite moments in the movie.

“Rocket’s loneliness and disaffection is at the center of the franchise for me.”

Gunn previously told Deadline he didn’t think Rocket’s story had been fully explored yet.

“He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and res through Infinity War and Endgame and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3,” he said.

Recalling the time before he was re-hired by the franchise, Gunn admitted his disappointment at not being able to see Rocket’s storyline through.

“That was a big loss to me — not being able to finish that story — though I was comforted by the fact they were still planning to use my script.”

When it comes to the scars on Rocket’s back, the comics may provide some insight into what Gunn has planned for the character’s origin.

In the Marvel comics, he was first seen on the planet Halfworld, home to the mentally ill who were provided with pets who could speak like humans and keep them company.

There, Rocket underwent surgeries and experiments to anthropomorphise him, resulting in the scars on his back.

It looks as though the former sheriff of Halfworld will get to explore the damaging relationship he had with those who turned him into the being he is now in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Both Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) have confronted the people responsible for their childhood trauma, with the former breaking free of the hold her adoptive father Thanos (Josh Brolin) had over her and the latter coming face-to-face with his father, Ego (Kurt Russell), in Guardians 2.

Following the events at the end of Avengers: Endgame, it looks as though the Guardians will be joined by Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on their next adventure.

However, actor Pratt has remained tight-lipped when it comes to confirming Thor’s involvement in the storyline.

Back in February, he teased: “How do you know that Thor’s not in Guardians 3? We haven’t shot it yet.

“He might  be in Guardians 2. We don’t know, there’s no definitive yes or no on that. You’ll just have to wait and see,” he said coyly.
