Iran vs USA: Iranian president Rouhani brands Trump administration ‘most evil’ in history | World | News

Hassan Rouhani went on a scathing rant against the White House after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Tehran of trying to “foment terror” during the global coronavirus pandemic. Tensions between Iran and the US have been strained throughout the past two years and ever since US President Donald Trump pulled out of the landmark nuclear deal in 2018.

In January this year, the two nations were on the brink of triggering a world war after US forces assassinated Iranian major general Qasem Soleimani during a missile attack in Iraq.

At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Mr Rouhani reignited the feud between the two world superpowers by again condemning the killing of the former head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards general Soleimani.

The 71-year-old said: “The worst and most evil government that the United States has had is at work.

“What government do you know which assassinates our military commander during a mission?”

General Soleimani was travelling through Baghdad, when his two-vehicle convey was struck by three US missiles on January 3.

Four days after the attack, Tehran retaliated and launched a series of ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing US troops.

Earlier this week during a visit to Israel, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Tehran of promoting terrorism during the COVID-19 crisis.

Iran has been one of the hardest hit nations by coronavirus and was one of the first countries outside China to detect COVID-19.

To date Iran has recorded more than 110,000 confirmed cases of the disease with more than 6,500 deaths.

According to AFP news agency, ahead of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Mr Pompeo said: “Even during this pandemic the Iranians are using the ayatollah regime’s resources to foment terror across the world.

“Even when the people of Iran are struggling so mightily.

At the cabinet meeting Mr Rouhani took aim at Mr Pompeo for his recent comments.

He said: “I cannot remember in America a White House that was so inhumane, stony-hearted, so ruthless, so incompetent, so unfamiliar.

“When you look at the secretary of state, it’s as if he has not read the ABCs of politics.”

In 2018 Mr Trump pulled out of the landmark Iran nuclear deal and described the accord from Barack Obama’s presidency as “the worst deal ever”.

The treaty agreed by nations including the UK, France, Germany, Russia and China prevents Tehran from developing nuclear weapons in return for sanctions relief.
