Retired super-middleweight boxer and Liverpool fan Paul Smith Jr wrote: “This is wrong. This doesn’t sound like my club.

“Companies making profits, who don’t have to furlough staff and choose to do so stinks. Tough times reveal true colours.”

The Premier League’s suspension has been extended indefinitely, with the league having proposed 30 per cent wage cuts for players.

The 20 top-flight clubs have agreed to the proposal and will ask players to take the cuts so as to protect jobs.

It comes after the UK’s health secretary Matt Hancock told Premier League footballers to “play their part” in offering support during the outbreak of the deadly virus.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of over 60,000 people worldwide, with nearly 4,500 in the UK.
