John Lennon, one of the frontmen of the Beatles, is renowned for his musical career, which spanned decades despite his early death. However, he was also known for his marriage to Yoko Ono, the artist who some suggest broke up the Beatles when she began dating Lennon. The couple had a son, Sean, but who is he and what does he do now?
Sean Ono Lennon was born in New York City on October 9, 1975, which was his father’s 35th birthday.
The young child had a great deal of contact with his father, as John chose to become a house husband and look after his son while Sean’s mother, Yoko Ono, pursued her artistic career.
Sadly, this changed when John was murdered outside his house on December 8, 1980.
After this tragic loss, Lennon went to kindergarten in Tokyo, before being educated at various well-to-do schools in Switzerland and New York, before he went to Columbia University to study anthropology.
Lennon dropped out to focus on music, following in his father’s footsteps, and went on tour with his mother, who was also making music.
Of course, Lennon’s first taste of the music industry was much before his time at university, as his musical debut came when he was just five-years-old.
Here, he recited a story on his mother’s album, Season of Glass, and collaborated with his mother throughout his childhood.
Lennon even received production credit on three of her solo albums and added vocals to various songs.
When he was 16, Lennon co-wrote a song with Lenny Kravitz for his 1991 album, Mama Said, and in 1995 formed a band to play alongside his mother on her band Rising.
After this, in 1996, Lennon worked with members of band Cibo Matto on a remix EP, and eventually became a member of the group, playing the bass guitar and singing on a number of their songs.
Through this, he gained notoriety with Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, who signed him with Grand Royal Records.
He launched a solo album and from here worked with huge names, including Spike Jonze for his music video Home.
The record label folded after Lennon had toured with Cibo Matto, and signed with Capitol Records in 2001, but his first solo material did not surface until 2006.
His album Friendly Fire as also made into a film, after which he started touring with his girlfriend, Charlotte Muhl as duo The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.
The band has collaborated with a number of acts, including Tame Impala, Beck and Florence and the Machine.
Similarly to his father and mother, Lennon has also spoken out about important political causes, such as fracking and Tibetan independence.
Of course, Sean is not an only child, and has a half brother from John’s first marriage to Cynthia, who is musician Julian Lennon.
