Lewis Hamilton contract: Mercedes tease F1 fans over new contract announcement | F1 | Sport

Lewis Hamilton’s future next season remains uncertain but Mercedes have teased fans over an imminent announcement, with the Briton set to extend his stay.

The Briton enjoyed a marvellous 2020 campaign, romping to a seventh world championship to move level with the legendary Michael Schumacher.

His current deal with Mercedes expires at the end of the season but it looks likely that he will be driving in F1 next year.

Toto Wolff has had grand success with Hamilton over the past few years and the signs point to that continuing for some time still.

Hamilton said: “I plan to be here next year. I want to be here next year.

“I think we as a team gave more to do together and more to achieve, both in the sport and even more outside it.”

It will come as a huge boost to Mercedes, who got a taste of life without the seven-time world champion Sakhir Grand Prix when he missed it through coronavirus.

Stand-in driver George Russell finished ninth – though he will be harsh show of luck on the day.

But fans are over the moon to hear the news on Hamilton, with many brimming with anticipation over a formal announcement on Hamilton’s new contract.

One fan said: “ADMIN NEEDS TO STOP PLAYING WITH US I AM: CRYING.”

Another wrote: “Can’t wait to see you strike again next year Champ.”

Whlle this supporter tweeted: “STAY CALM EVERYBODY STAY CALM.”

Hamilton’s record with Mercedes is simply astonishing after signing with them in 2013.

The Stevenage-born star has failed to win the World Championship on just two occasions – in his debut year and in 2016, when he came second.

But it has been smooth sailing for the most part for the Brit, who equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles this year.

He also overtook the German’s record for most race wins of 91 with a victory in Portugal.
