Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp may already be left regretting summer transfer decision | Football | Sport

Liverpool continued their fine start to the season on Saturday by thumping Crystal Palace 3-0 at Anfield to make it four wins in five games in the Premier League. Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita meant it was a straightforward afternoon for the Reds, who now sit top of the table.

Much was made of the club’s relative lack of activity in the transfer window over the summer, with centre-back Ibrahima Konate the only high-profile arrival.

Yet the low spending does not appear to be affecting them adversely at the moment, with Liverpool fans gleefully belting out their new anthem ‘The Reds have not no money but we’ll still win the league’ on the terraces.

While there was only one incoming player, Liverpool did ship out a lot of their deadwood in the market, selling the likes of Harry Wilson, Xherdan Shaqiri and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Yet interestingly they decided against letting Takumi Minamino leave – a decision Klopp may now be regretting.

The 26-year-old Japanese winger has struggled to make an impression on Merseyside ever since arriving from RB Salzburg last January.

He was sent on a loan spell to Southampton for the latter part of the 2020-21 campaign before returning to Liverpool over the summer.

It was believed the club considered another loan, but Klopp was adament the player would be a success with the Reds, saying: “When we allowed him to go in January it was a tough call to make because he is an important player for us and will be again in the future, no doubt.”

However, so far this season Minamino has yet to play a minute in any competition, and was once again an unused substitute against Palace.

With the likes of Salah and Mane so prolific once again, it is perhaps no surprise that Minamino cannot break into the starting line-up.

But it appears a big waste of a huge talent as he is left kicking his heels on the sidelines once again, and one has to question whether his development would have been better had he extended his stay at Southampton or gone to another Premier League club.

Liverpool do kick off their Carabao Cup campaign with a trip to Norwich on Tuesday, and Minamino could well be given a rare opportunity to shine at Carrow Road.

Yet it still seems highly unlikely he will ever be granted an extended run of games under Klopp no matter how well he does in the cup competitions.

Whether he is shipped out again in January remains to be seen, but until then Minamino’s frustrations are likely to grow.

The last thing Klopp needs with momentum building towards another title charge is an unhappy squad member on his hands.

But unless something changes fast, Minamino may well begin to regret leaving the Austrian league so early.

Whatever the case, it will fascinating to see how his situation plays out in the near future.
