MAN UTD 0-0 COPENHAGEN

39: Eric Bailly to the rescue! Former Manchester United right-back Guillermo Varela collects a lovely cross field pass from Rasmus Falk before seeing a half-volley into the box that Mohamed Daramy attacks. Bailly knocks it behind for a corner, which is promptly cleared.

36: Just one or two signs that Manchester United are springing into life now. Still not nailing those passes in the final third – but you sense it won’t be long before they do.

33: Some really nice stuff from Manchester United being played here. They are forcing Copenhagen to chase shadows with their one-touching passing. Mason Greenwood sees his thunderbolt deflected wide for a corner, which goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson collects.

30: Half-hour on the clock and we’re level in this mini tournament in Cologne. Anthony Martial slides in at the back post. He’s stretching but can’t connect with Marcus Rashford’s looping cross. Good idea.

28: Danger! Manchester United with a free-kick in a central position. It’s in range. Bruno Fernandes steps up… high and wide. No problems for goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson.

25: It’s all kicking off in tonight’s other Europa League quarter-final between Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen. Antonio Conte’s side went 2-0 up through Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku, but Chelsea transfer target Kai Havertz has pulled one back. Drinks break.

22: Weird. So VAR found that Harry Maguire was offside in the build up to this ghost penalty, so no spot-kick was given. We still haven’t seen it back again but I didn’t see much for a penalty to have been given in the first place.

21: Manchester United NEED to wake up tonight. They are half-asleep… WHAT?!

Mass confusion going on here in Cologne. There’s an innocuous incident inside the Copenhagen penalty area and referee Clément Turpin points to the spot. The United players have no idea what’s going on, so VAR has a look.

18: Wowzers! Manchester United are on the ropes!

Fred gifts the ball away inside his own half and forward Mohamed Daramy pounces. He sits Aaron Wan-Bissaka on his backside with a lovely turn before Harry Maguire slides in to make a block. They are looking seriously good value the Danish side.

15: Ouch! Aaron Wan-Bissaka has taken a cross straight to the chops and needs some medical attention. The Manchester United defender is back up and running but Boilesen has injured himself. Pierre Bengtsson replaces him.

13: Chance! Now… that would have put the cat amongst the pigeons. Rasmus Falk does really well to keep the ball in over open the left touchline. His pass finds Victor Nelsson, who cuts the ball inside for Mohamed Daramy. The Copenhagen striker looks certain to prod it in but Eric Bailly arrives to block.

10: Marcus Rashford takes centre-stage as Manchester United win a free-kick in a central position – perhaps 30-yards from goal. He fires at goal with that awkward, dipping technique but he’s sent it wide. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have switched gears now – they are firmly on top.

8: Harry Maguire uses Victor Nelsson as a ladder when challenging for a corner and he’s penalised by referee Clément Turpin.

5: Manchester United win the first corner of the evening and 21-year-old Jonas Wind heads clear. No sign of a ‘high press’ from Copenhagen tonight – they are sticking rigidly to their system. The Red Devils are having a bit of joy down the flanks with Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka mostly unmarked.

3: It’s 9pm out on Cologne and it’s 32 degrees. Not ideal and that’s why there will be a drinks break this evening. Finally, a drinks break I can approve of. It’s been a quick, sharp start for Copenhagen – having a good crack down that left channel through the enterprising Rasmus Falk.

1: PEEP! OK, we’re underway folks. All or nothing, sink or swim… win or lose for a place in the Europa League semi-finals. I’m a bit excited.

It’s still on

Manchester United will still end up signing Jadon Sancho this summer despite comments from Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc, according to former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

“Bluff! Calling the bluff, yeah,” Hargreaves said on BT Sport.

“I think he will be a Manchester United player in a pretty short time. Dortmund are trying to get a bit more money out of it, that’s just the nature of the beast.

“Obviously they know United are really interested, they’re pretty heavy into negotiations. But I think they’re bluffing, they know he’s going to leave at that price.”

Interesting, Owen. Very interesting.

Football buddies… kind of

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and FC Copenhagen manager Stale Solbakken are good friends. I was going to say CLOSE friends but there’s a reason that I didn’t…

It’s a bit of a master vs apprentice situation because Solskjaer spent time shadowing Solbakken in 2011 at FC Copenhagen. They played together in the Norwegian side too.

“We are friends from the national team in the 90s, where Norway was the second-best team in the world,” said Solbakken. “You won’t believe that! We were ranked number two in the world, so we played in a World Cup together.

“He took his coaching badge and I think he came to me before the last-16 against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2011. We have a good relationship. We are not close friends but I can say we are good friends.”

Bit menacing, isn’t it?

Transfers…

Been a few interesting deals completed (and virtually completed) today.

The first is Liverpool acquiring the services of Olympiacos left-back Kostas Tsimikas for around £11million. The Reds seem happy to have competition for Andrew Robertson.

Elsewhere Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi is on the verge of joining David Beckham’s MLS franchise Inter Miami on a free transfer.

Elliott Whitehouse also joined Forest Green from Grimsby but nobody’s talking about that one…

Twitter reaction

Josh: Big chance for Fred tonight. The first time he’s anchoring both Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. Lots of energy needed!

Jake: This Jadon Sancho saga is going to drag horribly, both clubs being awkward. Will be a while before any sort of deal is concluded in my opinion.

Jimmy: Very decent team that. Sticking with cup goalkeeper (changing it backfired on FA Cup), playing Eric Bailly who’s a better defender than Victor Lindelof (just injury prone) and Fred is more mobile than Nemanja Matic!

Jimmy clearly approves of Ole’s selection. Do you? Let me know through the usual channels.

Sancho, Sancho, SanchNO

See what I did there? Sanch-NO… No because the transfer is looking in serous doubt… I’ll get my coat.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has delivered a movie-style jab to the kidneys with his latest revelation today.

Today was supposedly the deadline for Manchester United to sign their top target Jadon Sancho, but he’s now been named in the Bundesliga club’s squad for this week’s training camp in Switzerland.

Furthermore, Zorc revealed that Sancho’s contract was extended to June 2023 last season!

“We plan on having Jadon Sancho in our team this season,” said Zorc. “The decision is final. I think that answers all our questions.

“Last summer we adjusted Jadon’s salary to match the development of his performances. So in context, we had already extended his contract until 2023 back then.”

Team news – Manchester United

Right then… Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes SIX changes from the side who beat LASK last week. Was it last week? Can’t remember. Who cares.

Anyway, Brandon Williams, Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Sergio Romero are the survivors from that forgettable evening.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood all come back in.

Quite interesting to see Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof among the substitutes.

Starting XI

Manchester United have announced their starting XI and the headline news is that Sergio Romero starts between the sticks. David de Gea is benched. Full analysis coming shortly.

The final eight…

We’re at the business end of a competition that started over 12 months ago now. It really is ridiculous isn’t it. The Europa League is the football equivalent of Takeshi’s Castle.

Anyway, the quarter-final fixtures are: Manchester United v FC Copenhagen, Inter Milan v Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk v Basel and Wolves v Sevilla.

You’ll know by now that the two Premier League sides will meet in a semi-final in Dusseldorf on 17 August if they both come through their quarter-finals.

The final is in Cologne on 21 August and the winners will be given a Champions League spot for next season – not a big problem for United.

Quite like Shakhtar Donetsk myself. Don’t ask me why – but I like ’em.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Manchester United vs FC Copenhagen in Cologne.

Everyone surviving this heat? Obviously it’s been around four thousand degrees around the UK today and that’s too warm to enjoy absolutely anything.

I looked at buying one of those Dyson fans with the circular hole in the middle – but that was £500 – so I put my underwear in the freezer instead.

Now that I’ve disgusted you all – let’s talk football.

Manchester United are now in a straight knockout situation now. No second legs. No second chances. It’s all or nothing in the new Europa League format.

Team news and line ups plus loads more coming up over the next few hours. Standby…

MAN UTD vs COPENHAGEN | TEAM NEWS

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to recall his big guns for tonight’s Europa League quarter-final against FC Copenhagen.

Harry Maguire and Brandon Williams are likely to be the only players to retain their places from the team that started last week’s 2-1 win against LASK Linz.

Solskjaer has only three injury problems to contend with ahead of the mini-tournament to conclude a Europa League tournament disrupted by the coronavirus crisis.

The squad travelled to Cologne on Sunday without Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones.

The biggest decision facing Solskjaer is whether to select Sergio Romero or David De Gea between the sticks.

The United boss was giving little away at his press conference but is expected to pick De Gea.

Speaking about the decision, he said: “That’s an obvious question. I think I must be the most privileged manager in the world with the goalkeeping department. Sergio, David and Dean. Three top ‘keepers.

“This season has shown how important Sergio has been for us. David has been performing there. We’ll see what we’ll do going forward.”
