Melania Trump blunder: FLOTUS to give speech years after Obama plagiarism scandal | World | News

The First Lady of the United States, next Tuesday will give her speech, four years after she was criticised for echoing words from a Michelle Obama address. An extract in Mrs Trump’s speech in Cleveland four years ago bore striking similarities to a section of Ms Obama’s address to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

The First Lady even repeated word-for-word passages and mirrored Ms Obama’s topics.

Ms Trump made few appearances on the campaign trail after her speech caused backlash and it is unclear how many speeches she will give in favour of Mr Trump’s re-election this fall.

US President Donald Trump will be joined by his wife in his address from the executive residence.

The move, however, has been questioned as it is widely seen as using the residence for political activities.

The First Lady has recently taken on the task of remodelling the Rose Garden, a section of the White House that is frequently used for presidential addresses.

The new layout of the lawn could be revealed this week.

Ms Trump’s project resembles that of horticulturalist Rachel Lambert ‘Bunny’ Mellon at the direction of President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

She has previously referenced Jackie Kennedy as her inspiration as a first lady.

A furious user wrote: “Priorities for @FLOTUS!

“Spend more taxpayer money on a house that the rest of the county are going to have to fumigate once the Trumps are forcefully removed in 5 months!”

One Twitter account added: “Millions of Americans are in dire straits and @FLOTUS can’t find anything to do but revamp the Rose Garden which is code for funnelling taxpayer money to her friends.”

Twitter users also criticised the timing of the project as the country struggled to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Another user added: “In the midst of a pandemic and her husband causing war on the streets of our cities this is what the first lady deems a project.”
