Princess Diana heartbreak: ‘Fairytale is OVER!’ How jury remained out over Royal Family | Royal | News

The Princess of Wales became one of the world’s most recognisable faces as a result of her 1981 wedding to Charles. But behind the marriage was a plethora of rumour and scandal that saw both Diana and Charles plagued with allegations of infidelity. Writing in the 1992 ‘Diana: Her True Story’, author Andrew Morton explained that despite the claims flying around ahead of their 1996 divorce, the British public remained staunchly behind the Princess.

He wrote: “The fairytale is no more.

“Daylight has been let in on the magic.

“While the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales may have been preserved and Diana may continue in her royal duties, the Royal Family now face an unenviable task in adapting themselves to the challenges of the twenty-first century.

“The jury is out and it is by no means certain that the verdict will be favourable to the monarchy.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales married in a traditional Church of England service at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Reports suggest the union was a “fairytale wedding” and reached a global audience of 750 million people.

Across the Commonwealth events were held to coincide with the special day.

However, less than a decade later they separated.

“It took her some time to adjust to her new billing as sister to the future Princess of Wales.

“Jane took a more practical approach.

“While she shared in the bride-to-be’s euphoria, as the wife of the Queen’s assistant private secretary, she couldn’t help but be concerned about how Diana would cope with royal life.”

The Royal Family have endured a number of significant difficulties following Diana’s death in 1997, including most recently with her son Prince Harry.

Harry and wife Meghan Markle both decided to stand down from their senior Royal Family roles in a bid to lead a “financially independent” life.

The couple opted to make the move, spending time in both North America and the UK.

Last week, it emerged that the Sussexes – who stood down on March 31 – had actually moved to California with their son Archie in order to spend more time in Meghan’s hometown.
