Royal Mail parcels changes: What are the delivery changes? How does it affect your post?


Royal Mail will make some changes this week amid the lockdown imposed by the Government to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The postal service has kept delivering letters and parcels to the nation throughout the pandemic, however, Royal Mail is now introducing changes in its service.

In a statement, they explained the changes are due to “double” the number of employee absences expected due to “illness and self-isolation”.

Royal Mail said: “To manage these severe absence levels – which are growing – we are implementing a range of mitigations.

“Despite our best endeavours, it is likely that some areas of the country will experience a reduction in service levels due to coronavirus-related absences at their local mail centre or delivery office.”

The changes came into effect on Monday, April 6.

Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm

Royal Mail will no longer guarantee deliveries by 1pm the next working day for items posted from Tuesday, March 31 onwards.

From this date the delivery service will instead guarantee deliveries by 9pm.

Royal Mail said: “As a result, we will not consider a claim for delay or consequential loss as a result of delay for items posted using the Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm service that are delivered between 1pm and 9pm, from that date.

“For items posted from Thursday 19 March 2020 up to and including Monday 30 March 2020 a guarantee will not be offered.

“As a result, we will not consider a claim for delay or consequential loss as a result of delay for items posted using the Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm service during this period.”

All Signature services

Royal Mail said: “We’ve put in place a temporary procedure for those services where we would normally capture a recipient’s signature on delivery in the UK.

“For items delivered on or after Saturday 14 March 2020, our postmen and women will not request a signature but will capture the recipient’s name and will ensure they take in the item.”

You’ll be able to see a special code, ‘XP1’ instead of signature.

Royal Mail will not consider refunds or compensation requests for not capturing a signature for items delivered on or after Saturday, March 14 and until further notice.
