Sergio Perez confirmed as Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate with Alex Albon axed | F1 | Sport

Sergio Perez has been announced as the team-mate of Max Verstappen at Red Bull for 2021 with Alex Albon dropping to the reserve driver after a disappointing 2020. The Mexican star was replaced at Racing Point by Sebastian Vettel and looked like having no drive for next season.

Perez is delighted to be racing for Red Bull in 2021 and is determined to make his mark.

The Mexican had his best season to date in 2020 picking up his first win in the sport at the recent Sakhir Grand Prix.

He wasn’t retained by Racing Point though with four-time champion Sebastian Vettel joining Lance Stroll at the team to be rebranded Aston Martin next year.

Perez is ready to impress after being given the opportunity at Red Bull.

He said: “I am incredibly grateful to Red Bull for giving me the opportunity to race for Red Bull Racing in 2021.

“The chance to race for a championship contending team is something I have been hoping for since I joined Formula One and it will be a proud moment to step onto the grid in Red Bull colours alongside Max.

“You can be sure that I will give next season my full focus. The Team has the same winning mentality as me and I know I am here to perform and help the Team fight for another title.”

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has explained the decision to replace Albon with Perez for next season.

Horner explained: “Alex is a valued member of the Team and we thought long and hard about this decision.

“Having taken our time to evaluate all the relevant data and performances we have decided that Sergio is the right driver to partner Max for 2021 and look forward to welcoming him to Red Bull Racing.

“Alex remains an important part of our Team as Test and Reserve Driver with a key focus on 2022 development and we would like to thank him for his hard work and contribution.”

Red Bull will hope to challenge the dominance of Mercedes in the 2021 season.

They were only able to win one race this year, the finale in Abu Dhabi with Verstappen dominated from start to finish.
