Sir Tom Jones 80th birthday: Star won’t stop singing until his voice goes | Music | Entertainment

The Welsh legend turned 80-years-old yesterday and celebrated with his fans on Instagram. Sir Tom Jones wrote: “Wow 80 years young today! It’s a great feeling to hit this milestone.”

Jones continued: “I’ve been blessed with so many extraordinary experiences and have had the privilege of meeting and working with outstanding, talented and inspiring people across many generations.

“It’s amazing when I think about it!

“To have a life in music, along with love, family, friends, and the most loyal fans throughout the years – who have allowed me to continue to record and tour the world for over fifty years, is truly an honour.

“Seeing and reading your goodwill birthday messages today especially during the lockdown, have really lifted my spirits and I am really looking forward to the future.”

The 80-year-old added: “Getting back out on tour and releasing new music, when the time is right. We will celebrate again.”

Speaking with Cerys Matthews for BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Wales, Sir Tom said: “The memories are tremendous and I don’t want to stop.

“To reach 80 and to have such wonderful memories and to be still doing it and still making a point, or trying to – thank you to everybody that has been with me, the audience.

“You can’t express yourself properly unless there’s people there to listen to you.”

Announcing the rescheduled dates for Tom Jones: A Celebration, the 80-year-old wrote on his Instagram account: “I’m really sorry to have to inform you that my shows scheduled for this Summer have had to be postponed until next year.

“As you most likely are aware, public performances are sadly not going forward as normal for just about everyone who works in music and entertainment. ⁣

“My team have been monitoring the UK government advice on organised gatherings and I now need to take this action to ensure the protection of fans, my crew and everyone who works in support of the shows.

“It is also important to help ease the pressure on those working on the front line to fight this virus.”

He added: “You all know how much I love performing but everybody’s safety must come first. ⁣

“Behind the scenes we’ve been working with local promoters to re-schedule all the shows from this summer as closely as possible. To make it easy, all tickets already purchased for this year will remain valid for the rescheduled shows in 2021.

“A full list of all rescheduled dates can be found on my website Alternately, if you need a refund, please contact your point of purchase. ⁣

“In the meantime, please stay home, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all soon.⁣”
