Star Wars fans were satisfied with the franchise’s ending after The Rise of Skywalker exploded onto cinema screens in November. They said goodbye to Princess Leia (played by the late Carrie Fisher) and watched Han Solo (Harrison Ford) return from beyond the grave for one final appearance. And it seemed as though Rey, Finn and Poe’s stories were wrapped up too. But now Disney has confirmed there will be another Star Wars film – helmed by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.
The Academy Award winner recently nabbed the gong for Best Adapted Screenplay for JoJo Rabbit.
The director is well-known for turning the Thor franchise around with Ragnarok.
Waititi also directed the first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+ to huge acclaim from fans and critics alike.
So Star Wars fans will likely be absolutely thrilled to learn the Disney alum will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film.
Another will follow the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.
Earlier this year, Waititi shut down the rumours he would be directing a Star Wars movie, but was he hiding the truth or is his involvement a new development?
Speaking in an interview with Variety, he said: “I wish there was a better story.
“Are there discussions about the Star Wars film?
“Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool Star Wars was.
“That’s what they’re going off.” Waititi later said he would “love to” but only “if it was right”.
“I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense. And if it felt not like career suicide,” he added.
Taika Waititi’s next Disney film, Thor: Love and Thunder, is set to be released February 11, 2022.
