The Beatles were born out of John Lennon’s teen band the Quarrymen back in 1960. The group really began to take its final form when Paul McCartney joined after meeting Lennon that summer, and George Harrison came into the fold the following year. It wasn’t until 1962 that Ringo Starr replaced their then-drummer Pete Best to take his place behind the kit for what would go on to be one of the most famous bands in the world.

The Beatles released 12 studio albums in total, before officially breaking up in 1970.

But how savvy are you when it comes to your knowledge of the band?

However, towards the end of the 1960s, Lennon began to eye up a different path.

In 1969, having met Yoko Ono three years earlier, he shocked the group by announcing he was quitting.

The news was kept from fans until the following year, when they officially split.

All four members went solo, with Lennon moving further into the avant-garde with his new wife Ono and The Plastic Ono Band.

McCartney pursued solo success with his new outfit Wings, while Starr also launched his solo career with the release of Sentimental Journey.

Harrison had already released two solo albums before The Beatles’ split and continued to have success away from the band.

Elsewhere, Lennon was tragically shot and killed on December 8, 1980.

Guitarist Harrison died of lung cancer on November 29, 2001.
