This ISN’T over: Coronavirus pandemic getting WORSE – warning as 136,000 infected in 24hrs | World | News

The WHO said on Monday over 136,000 people had contracted the in the last 24 hours. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “More than six months into this pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal.” The spread of the disease is now a “great concern” in Latin America.

He said: “Almost 7 million cases of COVID-19 have now been reported to WHO, and almost 400,000 deaths.

“Although the situation in Europe is improving, globally it is worsening.

“More than 100,000 cases have been reported on 9 of the past 10 days. Yesterday, more than 136,000 cases were reported, the most in a single day so far.”

After the US, Brazil has the second-highest number of coronavirus deaths.

Michael J Ryan, Chief Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme said: “What we’re seeing from Mexico all the way through to Chile is an increasing pattern across the Americas, across Latin America, with some notable exceptions.”

Mr Ryan said: “It’s not one country.

“It’s many, many countries experiencing very severe epidemics.

“In these countries, the biggest threat now is complacency.

“Results from studies to see how much of the population has been exposed to the virus show that most people globally are still susceptible to infection.”

The WHO chief echoed the words of the secretary-general.

He advised nations not to relax restrictions after spending months in lockdown.

Six months after the outbreak in Wuhan seven million people have been infected across the world.

Tragically, 400,000 people have died.
