Tyson Fury responds to Deontay Wilder ‘champion’ dig with blunt putdown | Boxing | Sport

Tyson Fury has hit out at Deontay Wilder after the American questioned his reign as WBC heavyweight champion. Fury brought about the end of the Olympian’s time atop of the WBC’s heavyweight rankings last February.

The lineal heavyweight champion put on a career-best performance on his way to registering a seventh-round TKO victory, which saw him become a two-time world titleholder.

Wilder was quick to give Fury his props in the immediate aftermath of his first professional loss, though he later blamed the defeat on the extravagant costume he wore during his ring walk.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ further detracted from Fury’s victory earlier this week by insisting he’s not the true owner of the WBC title.

“You don’t go backwards, you move forwards, and that night, I wasn’t myself,” Wilder said in an interview on the PBC’s podcast.

“It was you I smashed that’s the truth. Just admit it and move on, it’s just a fight you win some you lose some that’s boxing pal.”

Fury and Wilder will renew their rivalry later this year after the former champion’s decision to exercise the trilogy fight clause placed in his contract.

The third instalment of Fury vs Wilder was initially slated to take place in Las Vegas on July 18 but has been postponed until October.

Wilder is treating his third showdown with Fury as a must-win fight, saying: “This is the last final straw as I see it.”

“I’m taking everything in that happened, everything that happened towards me. I’m cutting my grass, I’m getting rid of a lot of snakes in the grass.

“This time has allowed me to look back, dig in the weed and see what was really going on. You can have a lot of great people around you, but certain jealousy of people you can’t control.

“Everybody wants certain things, everybody wants what you have but they don’t want to work as hard as you, to sacrifice as much as you.

“People get envious of the things they can’t have, I had to weed out, change up certain things.”
