“Yes but they’re talking to Inter about swapping players and it’s the only way it could happen.

“By swapping players or selling players for the value of about €50m, €60m and that money can go to Inter.

“At the moment none of that has happened, so it’s still very unlikely that this deal will happen but they’re working towards it.”

Former Liverpool and United forward Michael Owen has compared Werner to Fernando Torres, although the Liverpool version rather than the Spaniard who played for Chelsea.

The Spaniard set the league alight for the Reds, scoring 65 times in just 102 games in England’s top flight.

But he switched to Chelsea in January 2011 for £50m and would go on to net just 20 times in 110 matches.
