Winter has arrived and temperatures have dropped for many regions of the UK. Many areas have experienced intense snowfall and bone-chilling temperatures in recent weeks meaning heating costs have risen. But for some people struggling to heat their homes amid these wintry conditions, the Winter Fuel Allowance can provide much-needed money. But what age do you get Winter Fuel Allowance?

What is a Winter Fuel Allowance?

The Winter Fuel Allowance is a one-off payment made during the winter to assist people with their heating costs.

This annual tax-free monetary payment is made to most households between November and December.

The payment is available to any eligible individual in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Who is eligible for a Winter Fuel Allowance? What age do you get Winter Fuel Allowance?

The Winter Fuel Allowance is available to persons of a certain age.

To claim this benefit you must belong to a household where at least one person is over State Pension age.

This means you must have been born on or before April 5, 1954, to be eligible.

The current State Pension age is now 67.

Anyone who reaches this age and has lived in the UK for at least one day of the qualifying week will be entitled to the payment.

The qualifying week this year was between September 21 to 27, 2020.

How to claim a Winter Fuel Allowance

Most people eligible for Winter Fuel Allowance do not need to claim this payment.

It tends to be automatically paid to eligible individuals.

However, you will need to claim it if you have not had it before and any of the following apply:

  • You do not get benefits or a State Pension
  • You only get Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction or Child Benefit.
  • You get benefits or a State Pension but living in Switzerland or an EEA country.
  • You have deferred your State Pension, even if you had it before.
  • If your circumstances have changed.
